Thursday, 4 February 2010: ROBBEN ISLAND
We will leave the Breakwater Lodge at 8:15 and walk to the jetty of the new Robben Island ferry. The boat leaves at 9:00 and you will enjoy the ride which will give you a stunning and unique view of the

"Mother City" with its Table Mountain backdrop.

The history of this 474-ha island goes back thousands of years. In centuries past it was used as a pantry and source of raw materials by seafarers and colonists and as a whaling station, hospital, mental asylum and military base. But Robben Island is best known as a place of banishment. The most famous prisoner who spent 19 of the total 27 years of his incarceration here was Nelson Mandela, South Africa's previous State President.

A former inmate will take you on the one and a half hour tour through the prison and around the island with its beautiful flora and fauna. The last prisoners left the island in 1996, and since then Robben Island has become a museum which symbolises the struggle to overthrow apartheid.

Thursday, 4 February 2010: AFTERNOON AT THE WATERFRONT AND AQUARIUM

For many centuries the immense sweep of Table Bay served as a loadstone for mariners of many nations, providing respite on the long journey from Europe around the Cape to the East. Sailors would stock up here with fresh water, provisions and livestock. Over the last 300 years, since the arrival of the Dutch, the ad-hoc construction of jetties and other buildings gave the city's waterfront a vibrant, but untidy aspect.

In the 1940's, the reclamation of huge areas of land on the foreshore pushed back the Atlantic, burying forever the sweeping beaches where the waves, in times gone by, had crashed against the walls of the Castle.

graphics27

In the 1960's, however, a worldwide trend to redevelop dilapidated inner harbours caught on in Cape Town and hanged the aspect of the former unattractiveness with its ugly high-rises and raised waterways. The further attraction of the surviving Victorian architecture of the original harbour buildings spurred on the plans to return the city to the sea and in 1992 much of the work of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront was completed.
Today the Waterfront is South Africa's number one tourist attraction, with shops, boutiques, cinemas, theatres, hotels, restaurants and cruise boats where one can enjoy a unique setting.

14:30

Meet at the Breakwater Lodge.

15:00

Visit the Two-Oceans Aquarium with a special guide.

16:00

Guided tour through the historic Waterfront. Visit the arts and crafts market,

"scratch-patch'', where you can select and buy gemstones in all the colours and sizes

from all over the world, or just enjoy the bustling ambience of the Waterfront.
