Organization of writeups Students usually work in pairs. All notes, sketches, readings and data points must be recorded in a laboratory notebook. No loose pieces of paper are allowed. The notebook must be signed by the demonstrator at the end of the afternoon, or the next day. A copy of all spectra must be stored in the correct group sub-directory in the STUDENT account on the Physci network. The next week a preliminary analysis must be discussed with the demonstrator. A mark is assigned to this. The final write up must be presented two weeks after commencing the experiment.
Scilab accounts Students will need a Scilab account for data analysis and web access. Check on Friday before the first lab class that your account is working. To access the website, run your web browser and point to http://www.phy.uct.ac.za/courses/phy321f. Find your way to the lab page.
Safety Safety is a priority. No student may open any equipment driven by mains voltage or high voltage. Because radioactive sources are used in the lab, eating and drinking in the lab is not allowed. The lab must be kept locked. When you leave the lab, all radioactive sources not in use must be returned to their holders. Those in use for counting must have a radioactive sign mounted on the equipment.
